HIPAA & NIST CSF Alignment

Secure Protected Health Information (PHI) and build resilient healthcare infrastructure by bridging HHS regulatory mandates with strict NIST cybersecurity engineering.

Healthcare Cybersecurity and HIPAA
HEALTHCARE DEFENSE

Compliance is paper. Security is engineering.

The HIPAA Security Rule mandates that Covered Entities and Business Associates protect ePHI, but it is intentionally vague on exactly how to do it. This ambiguity leaves many healthcare organizations vulnerable to catastrophic ransomware attacks and severe HHS OCR fines.

To solve this, Cyberella Corps aligns your HIPAA compliance efforts directly with the NIST Cybersecurity Framework (CSF). By mapping the abstract legal requirements of HIPAA to the concrete, actionable technical controls of NIST, we move your organization beyond mere "checkbox compliance" into true operational resilience.

NIST HIPAA CROSSWALK

Translating HIPAA mandates into NIST security execution.

Identify

NIST Alignment: Asset Management & Risk Assessment. HIPAA Alignment: Conduct an accurate and thorough assessment of the potential risks and vulnerabilities to the confidentiality of ePHI.

Protect

NIST Alignment: Access Control & Data Security. HIPAA Alignment: Implement technical policies that allow access only to authorized persons, including strict encryption and MFA protocols.

Detect

NIST Alignment: Anomalies & Continuous Monitoring. HIPAA Alignment: Implement hardware and software mechanisms that record and examine activity in information systems containing ePHI.

Respond

NIST Alignment: Incident Planning & Mitigation. HIPAA Alignment: Identify and respond to suspected or known security incidents; mitigate harmful effects of known security incidents.

Recover

NIST Alignment: Recovery Planning & Communications. HIPAA Alignment: Establish (and implement as needed) procedures for restoring any loss of data due to ransomware or system failure.

COMPLIANCE ROADMAP

Our structured approach to healthcare resilience.

// PHASE_01

ePHI Data Discovery & Scoping

Before securing systems, we must map the data. We utilize automated scanning and deep organizational interviews to trace the flow of Electronic Protected Health Information (ePHI) across your EHR systems, cloud applications, and third-party vendors.

// PHASE_02

HIPAA Gap Analysis

We conduct a formal HIPAA Security Risk Assessment (SRA)—a strict legal requirement—identifying deficiencies across Administrative, Physical, and Technical safeguards.

// PHASE_03

NIST CSF Implementation

We translate the identified HIPAA gaps into concrete NIST CSF engineering tasks: deploying strong encryption, refining IAM roles, setting up log aggregation, and tuning endpoint detection.

// PHASE_04

BAA Management & Incident Response

A secure perimeter means nothing if your vendors are breached. We help establish strong Business Associate Agreements (BAAs), evaluate third-party risk, and develop the mandatory breach notification protocols required by the HITECH Act.

DELIVERABLES

What you get.

1
// 01

Security Risk Assessment

A formally documented Risk Analysis report as legally required by CFR 164.308(a)(1)(ii)(A), proving to OCR auditors that you have systematically evaluated ePHI risk.

2
// 02

NIST Target Profile & Roadmap

A clear, engineered roadmap mapping the gaps found in the SRA directly to NIST CSF controls, with prioritized, technical remediation steps to secure your architecture.

3
// 03

HIPAA Policy Suite

A complete, customized set of administrative policies, incident response playbooks, disaster recovery plans, and BAA templates that satisfy OCR requirements.

01

Why should we use NIST CSF for HIPAA compliance?

+

HIPAA tells you WHAT you must protect (ePHI) but is notoriously vague on HOW to protect it, intentionally leaving room for technology to evolve. The NIST Cybersecurity Framework (CSF) provides the concrete 'how'. The federal government explicitly recognizes the NIST CSF as a proven methodology to satisfy the HIPAA Security Rule.

02

Are we a Covered Entity or a Business Associate?

+

Covered Entities include healthcare providers, health plans, and healthcare clearinghouses. If you provide services to a Covered Entity and require access to ePHI to perform those services (e.g., cloud hosting, IT support, SaaS platforms, billing), you are a Business Associate and are also legally bound to comply with HIPAA.

03

Is there a formal HIPAA Certification?

+

No. Unlike ISO 27001 or SOC 2, there is no official, government-recognized 'HIPAA Certification'. Compliance is proven through documented Security Risk Assessments, continuous operational security, and the ability to pass an audit by the HHS Office for Civil Rights (OCR) if investigated or breached.

04

What happens if we experience a ransomware attack involving ePHI?

+

Under the HIPAA Breach Notification Rule, ransomware attacks that encrypt ePHI are generally considered a breach, because the data was accessed and compromised. You must legally notify affected individuals, the Secretary of HHS, and potentially the media. Cyberella's Incident Response team handles this exact scenario.

05

Do you help with HIPAA Privacy Rule compliance as well?

+

Yes. While our core focus is the technical engineering required by the HIPAA Security Rule, we also conduct deep assessments of your administrative procedures to ensure alignment with the Privacy Rule (e.g., Notice of Privacy Practices, Minimum Necessary standard).
